JEC ScopeSeat Plinth Modification to Modernise MTR Train Carriages
LocationHong Kong
Project Completion Date2009

Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC) modified MTR train carriage seat plinths as part of a modernisation programme. The works comprised the design, manufacture, supply, and in-situ installation of stainless steel seat plinths for all existing 93 trains apart from the Airport Express Line and Tung Chung Line trains. JEC replaced the seats in a total of 744 carriages.

The contract was to replace old, easily worn vertical front side seat plinths with tailor-made stainless steel seat plinths. This enhanced the quality of the seat plinths and prolonged the trains’ service life. In each car, there are eight seats consisting of seven benches with a length of 2.4m and one bench with a length of 1.2m. A total of around 6000 seats were modified.

The seat plinths were specially designed by JEC in close co-operation with the MTR Corporation (MTRC). All curved plates of the seat plinths were pre-fabricated to maintain high quality and to meet the tight schedule required. In addition to tailor made seat plinths, an orbit cutter used for installation was specially designed for the project. This ensured standardised installation in all 744 cars. This was the first time that MTRC has replaced vertical front side seat plinths from floor mat to stainless steel and the project was a success.
